Hospital Ferreira Machado completes tenth organ procurement of the year

Hospital Ferreira Machado (HFM) in Campos dos Goytacazes has completed its tenth organ procurement of 2026. The most recent procedure took place on Sunday, following authorization from the family of a 58-year-old man from Petrolina, Pernambuco, who suffered a cerebrovascular accident (AVE) while in the region for work.

The patient's kidneys and liver were harvested and sent to Rio de Janeiro and Itaperuna, respectively. Dr. Patrícia Rangel, head of the Hospital Organ Donation and Transplant Team (e-DOT), emphasized that providing emotional support and guidance to families is a critical component of the donation process.

As of October 27, HFM has recorded 36 potential donor notifications, 10 family authorizations, and 10 successful procurements. These efforts have resulted in the collection of over 37 organs and tissues, including 16 kidneys, eight livers, five pairs of corneas, three hearts, bones, and tendons.
