Hospital Geral de Nova Iguaçu issues urgent blood donation appeal
The Blood Bank at the Hospital Geral de Nova Iguaçu (HGNI) has issued an urgent appeal for blood donors due to low stock levels. While all blood types are needed, O positive and O negative types are currently the most critical.
As a primary open-door emergency facility in the Baixada Fluminense region, the hospital performs an average of 600 surgeries per month and treats numerous trauma and accident victims daily. To maintain adequate supply, the facility requires at least 900 donations monthly.
Municipal Health Secretary Luiz Carlos Nobre Cavalcanti emphasized the importance of community mobilization to ensure patients receive necessary transfusions. To assist donors, the HGNI offers free transportation for groups of four to 15 people from Nova Iguaçu and neighboring cities, provided they schedule at least three days in advance.
