Hospital in General Roca performs complex surgery to restore patient's voice
Medical professionals at the Hospital Francisco López Lima in General Roca successfully performed a complex surgical procedure to help a 20-year-old patient recover her voice. The patient had been dependent on a tracheostomy for six years due to laryngeal stenosis, a condition that had previously required interventions at the Garrahan Hospital in Buenos Aires.
The high-complexity surgery involved laryngeal expansion using a cartilage autograft and the placement of a laryngeal mold prosthesis. This technique aims to widen the airway, restore anatomical functions, and facilitate speech rehabilitation.
The procedure was conducted entirely within the provincial public health system, avoiding the need for a referral outside of Río Negro. The surgical team included specialist Sebastián Sturla, thoracic surgeons José Sustersic and Alejandro Vona, and anesthesiologist Cristian Santana.
