Hospital in Pernambuco under investigation after infant's death

The Civil Police are investigating a potential homicide following the death of 4-month-old Miguel Ângelo Barbosa at the Hospital Memorial de Goiana in Pernambuco, Brazil. According to the family, the infant died after milk was mistakenly injected into his vein instead of being administered through a gastro-nasal feeding tube.

The baby had been hospitalized since October 11 for bronchiolitis. The family reported that the medical professional involved had previously performed the procedure correctly, despite the feeding tube and intravenous access being color-coded and located on opposite sides of the patient. The hospital has suspended the staff member involved and expressed solidarity with the family.

Medical results expected within 30 days are anticipated to confirm the exact cause of death.
