Hospital Infanta Elena adopts minimally invasive glaucoma surgery

The Ophthalmology Service at Hospital Infanta Elena in Huelva has implemented new minimally invasive surgical techniques, known as MIGS, to treat glaucoma. These procedures utilize microscopic microimplants to improve the drainage of aqueous humor, thereby reducing intraocular pressure and preventing damage to the optic nerve.

Compared to traditional more invasive surgeries, these techniques involve smaller incisions, which can reduce the risk of infection, minimize the need for sutures, and accelerate patient recovery. The implementation of this technology required specialized training for medical professionals and the acquisition of specific equipment to ensure precision.

Glaucoma is a group of diseases that can cause progressive and irreversible vision loss. Because the condition can develop for years without obvious symptoms, medical officials emphasize the importance of regular ophthalmic examinations, particularly for individuals over the age of 60.
