Hospital Juan Pablo II performs first pediatric neuronavigation surgery

The Hospital Juan Pablo II in Corrientes, Argentina, has successfully performed its first pediatric neurosurgery using neuronavigation technology. The procedure, described as a “GPS inside the brain,” was used to treat an adolescent patient suffering from two deep cerebral abscesses.

Neurosurgeon and associate director Romilio Monzón led the operation, which utilized tomography and resonance imaging data to guide a minimally invasive incision. This technology allowed the medical team to aspirate the abscesses with high precision. The successful outcome means that local patients may no longer need to travel to Buenos Aires for such specialized procedures.

Public Health Minister Emilio Lanari Zubiaur stated that the milestone demonstrates the capacity of local professionals and the province's advancement in medical procedures. Due to the minimally invasive nature of the surgery, the patient is expected to return to normal activities within a week.
