Hospital La Candelaria staff protest hiring cuts in Tenerife

Hundreds of workers at the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Tenerife participated in a protest on October 8 to oppose hiring cuts and demand improved staffing and working conditions.

According to the Intersindical Canaria union, current hiring restrictions are increasing workloads, saturating emergency services, and lengthening waiting lists. The union argues that existing staff levels are insufficient to meet the needs of the growing population, particularly in southern Tenerife.

This demonstration marks the beginning of a period of mobilization. Additionally, the Medical Union (CESM) and the Canary Islands Medical Employees Union (SEMCA) have announced an indefinite medical strike within the Canary Health Service (SCS) starting October 16, citing a lack of progress in negotiations regarding an 18-point package of improvements.
