Hospital Álvaro Cunqueiro implants first Jenavalve for aortic insufficiency in Spain

The Interventional Cardiology Unit at Hospital Álvaro Cunqueiro performed the first implant in Spain of Jenavalve, a new transcatheter valve designed specifically for severe symptomatic aortic insufficiency in high‑risk surgical patients. Three patients received the device, were discharged and are recovering well.

The minimally invasive procedure uses a catheter introduced via the femoral artery, avoiding open‑heart surgery and reducing complications, hospital stay and recovery time. Dr. José A. Baz, head of the unit, highlighted the valve’s three‑clip anchoring system that provides complete and secure fixation to the native valve anatomy. The hospital’s extensive experience, with around 350 cardiac valve implants per year, was cited as a key factor in selecting it for the pioneering procedure.
