Hospital Álvaro Cunqueiro opens extra beds due to emergency demand

The Álvaro Cunqueiro Hospital in the Vigo health area has been forced to activate ten additional beds on its first floor to manage high demand for admissions from the Emergency Department. This surge is attributed to increased summer tourism, a higher number of accidents, and the transfer of patients from Povisa.

Staff report that many patients arrive with chronic pathologies that have worsened due to a lack of regular check-ups at health centers during the summer, often caused by reduced staffing levels. At times, up to 30 patients have been pending admission in the Emergency Department, with some waiting between 24 and 48 hours for a hospital bed. Labor unions, such as the CIG, have called for increased staffing to prevent bed closures and manage the seasonal pressure.
