Hospital Meixoeiro receives new 1.7M€ mobile MRI unit

The Xunta de Galicia has invested over 1.7 million euros in a new mobile magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit based at Hospital Meixoeiro. This marks the fourth unit added to Galicia’s specialized mobile diagnostic service, which has been operating for 20 years to provide imaging services to regional hospitals.

The new equipment features artificial intelligence to assist with patient positioning and image reconstruction, which helps improve diagnostic speed and image quality. It is particularly beneficial for patients with tremors or difficulty remaining still. The unit offers a wider 70-centimeter opening compared to the standard 60 centimeters and utilizes a high-field magnet (1.5 to 3 teslas) to produce high-definition images with reduced noise.

Additionally, the technology reduces helium requirements by more than 30%, lowering both environmental impact and operational costs. Following a two-week training period for the nine-person medical team, the unit is scheduled to begin service at Hospital del Salnés.
