Hospital Metropolitano performs multi-organ procurement in Mato Grosso
A multi-organ procurement operation conducted at the Hospital Metropolitano in Várzea Grande, Mato Grosso, has potentially provided life-saving opportunities for up to six patients. The procedure, which was the ninth of its kind in the state in 2026, involved the successful recovery of one heart, one liver, two kidneys, and two corneas.
The operation required a highly coordinated logistical effort involving the State Transplant Center, medical teams from Brasília, the National Transplant System (SNT), the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), and the Integrated Air Operations Center (Ciopaer). This inter-institutional collaboration ensured the rapid and secure transport of the organs to maintain viability.
Health officials emphasized that the success of such procedures relies on the express consent of the donor's family and the efficiency of the integrated health network in matching organs with compatible recipients through strict screening protocols.
