Hospital Miguel Couto launches blood donation drive on July 17 in Rio de Janeiro

The Municipal Hospital Miguel Couto in Rio de Janeiro will hold a blood‑donation mutirão on Friday, 17 July, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the emergency hall (Rua Bartolomeu Mitre, Gávea). The campaign is organized in partnership with the state blood‑component provider Hemório, which supplies more than 200 public hospitals in the city. Its aim is to replenish the hospital’s blood bank to ensure the continuity of emergency care, surgeries and other procedures that require blood components.

Donors will be screened by health professionals before collection. After donation, the blood is separated into components that can save up to four lives. Eligibility requirements include being 16–69 years old, weighing at least 50 kg, presenting a valid photo ID and being in good health. Donors should avoid fatty foods before the appointment, observe a 6‑month (tattoos) or 12‑month (piercings in mucosa) waiting period, and wait at least 10 days after recovering from COVID‑19. Men may donate again after eight weeks, women after twelve weeks. Results of the pre‑donation tests can be requested after 30 days.
