Hospital Moinhos de Vento study validates HPV vaccine effectiveness

A study conducted by Hospital Moinhos de Vento in Porto Alegre has demonstrated that HPV vaccination significantly reduces the circulation of the virus in Brazil. Research involving over 16,000 young people aged 16 to 25 showed that the prevalence of vaccine-targeted types among women dropped from 15.64% to 5.92% between the study phases. The data indicates an 81% reduction in vaccinated women and a 33% reduction in unvaccinated women, suggesting a protective indirect effect through herd immunity.

In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, vaccination coverage has reached 80.63% for girls and 72.86% for boys. While these figures are noted as being relatively high, they remain below the 90% coverage target for girls under 14 established by the World Health Organization. Researchers emphasize that reaching the global target is essential to ensure full protection for the youth population during peak transmission ages.
