Hospital Municipal Santa Isabel performs advanced tissue regeneration surgeries
Hospital Municipal Santa Isabel (HMSI) is performing four surgeries using the One Step technique, a modern method for tissue regeneration. The procedures aim to treat two patients with Crohn's disease-related fistulas and two patients with pilonidal diseases.
The technique involves extracting cells from the patient's own fat after local laser photostimulation. This material is processed in the operating room to obtain the Stromal Vascular Fraction (SVF), which is rich in regenerative cells, and then applied to the surgical site to aid tissue recovery.
Surgeon Mariama Barroso, a specialist and instructor from the Institute for Research against Digestive System Cancers (IRCAD), is leading the surgeries and providing training to the hospital's coloproctology team. Dr. Shirlane Frutuoso, the technical lead and coordinator of the Coloproctology Service, noted that the initiative aims to improve outcomes for patients, particularly those within the public health service.
