Digital health initiatives expand medical access in Argentina and Chile

Various health authorities in Argentina and Chile are implementing digital tools and telemedicine to improve medical access in remote or underserved regions.

In Argentina, IPROSS has expanded a digital authorization system for diagnostic imaging across several regions of Río Negro, including Alto Valle and Valle Medio. This allows patients to bypass in-person administrative visits by having providers manage authorizations directly with the institution. In Chubut, a partnership between the provincial health secretariat and the Alexander Fleming Institute enables specialists in Buenos Aires to remotely interpret mammographies for hospitals in Trevelin and El Maitén. Additionally, the José Alberto Sánchez Hospital in Río Turbio has introduced telemedicine cabins to connect the Carboniferous Basin with provincial health networks, offering remote consultations in specialties such as cardiology, neurology, and psychiatry.

In Chile, the Hospital Regional de Antofagasta utilized telemedicine to provide critical medical evaluations to a family isolated by weather-related road closures in Taltal, demonstrating the technology's role in ensuring territorial health equity during emergencies.
