Hospital Regional Ushuaia performs complex pectus excavatum surgery

The Hospital Regional Ushuaia successfully performed a complex, minimally invasive surgery to correct a severe case of pectus excavatum, also known as “pecho hundido,” in a 14-year-old patient.

The procedure, which took place in late July, involved the use of custom-designed titanium bars created from 3D reconstructed CT scans to match the patient's specific anatomy. To manage post-operative pain, surgeons utilized a cryoanalgesia system. The surgery lasted approximately three hours and required a specialized crane to facilitate the placement of the bars.

As the patient did not have private health insurance, the operation and all necessary resources were funded by the provincial state through the public health system. The medical team included specialists from the Hospital Regional Ushuaia and pediatric surgeons from the Hospital de Niños de La Plata, including Maximiliano Acuña and Carlos Marti.
