Hospital Salvador Bienvenido Gautier has successfully performed its first cornea transplant. The procedure was conducted on a patient over 60 years old who had lost vision in both eyes due to complications from previous cataract surgeries.
Led by chief surgeon Dr. Judith Portorreal, the surgical intervention lasted approximately one hour. The corneal tissue used for the transplant was sourced from a cornea bank in the United States.
Medical staff noted that the recovery process is long-term, with full vision restoration potentially taking between one month and one year. Once the first eye successfully recovers, a second transplant will be scheduled for the patient's other eye.
