Hospital Universitario de Jaén warns of dehydration risks for elderly
Specialists from the Internal Medicine Unit at the Hospital Universitario de Jaén, part of the Servicio Andaluz de Salud (SAS), are issuing warnings to prevent dehydration in elderly populations as summer temperatures rise.
Medical experts note that aging reduces the sensation of thirst and the body's ability to adapt to temperature changes. This makes it difficult for older adults to perceive the need for fluids in a timely manner. The risk is heightened for patients with chronic illnesses, such as hypertension or cardiovascular disease, particularly those taking diuretic medications that increase fluid loss.
Key recommendations include encouraging fluid intake throughout the day without waiting for the sensation of thirst, avoiding physical exertion during peak heat hours, and staying in cool, ventilated environments. Caregivers are advised to monitor for signs of dehydration, such as sudden weakness, confusion, drowsiness, or decreased urine output.
