Hospitality Industry Confronts Affordability Pressures and Over‑Tourism Revamp

Travel demand in Southeast Asia remains robust, but rising transportation, accommodation and overall trip costs are preventing many consumers from completing bookings, says AirAsia MOVE CEO Nadia Omer. Hotel operators are urged to emphasize clear value, flexible pricing and personalized experiences rather than competing solely on discount rates. The sector is also leveraging better data quality and AI to tailor offers as younger and solo‑female travellers emerge as growth segments, while geopolitical disruptions continue to reshape destination choices.

At the same time, industry leaders in Europe warn that the traditional growth model of new builds is hitting limits amid over‑tourism, resource scarcity and shifting luxury expectations. Investors are now prioritising resilient, adaptable projects that can be economically sustained. The focus is moving toward "intelligent continued building"—renovating and repurposing existing resorts, such as the Innside by Meliá Elounda in Crete and the Europe Hotel Killarney in Ireland, to deliver authentic, flexible experiences that align with a new definition of luxury based on atmosphere and identity rather than size.
