Hospitality sector shows rising confidence despite economic pressures

The hospitality industry is experiencing a rise in business confidence, though economic challenges persist. According to a Business Confidence Survey from NIQ and Zonal, 53% of sector leaders feel optimistic about their business prospects over the next 12 months, a significant increase from 37% at the end of the second quarter. This optimism follows a period of solid revenue, with 84% of businesses reporting that they maintained or increased their year-on-year revenue during the third quarter.

However, the recovery remains uneven. Smaller and independent businesses report much lower optimism, with only 11% of independent leaders feeling positive about the coming year. Industry leaders continue to face pressure from rising costs, specifically energy bills and inflation, which squeeze profit margins.

In the United States, discussions at The Lodging Conference highlighted a strategic shift in the sector. Due to high construction costs and financing hurdles, growth is expected to be driven by the conversion and repositioning of existing hotels rather than new ground-up developments. Additionally, the industry is monitoring the expanding influence of artificial intelligence, both in operational efficiencies and in how consumers research and book travel.
