Mohamed Salah rested for Egypt's South Sudan qualifier

Egypt national team captain Mohamed Salah was rested for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Sudan due to concerns regarding the artificial turf pitch in Juba. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) and head coach Hossam Hassan confirmed that the decision was made in agreement with Salah to protect him from potential injury.

The absence follows recent speculation regarding tension between Salah and Hassan after the player was substituted during a previous goalless draw against Angola. Hassan dismissed these rumors, emphasizing that Salah remains a “crucial, influential, and fundamental element” of the squad and that his well-being is a priority.

While some reports suggested personal reasons or internal disputes, the official stance remains that the playing surface was the primary factor. Salah, who currently plays for Trabzonspor, is expected to return to the squad for upcoming fixtures, including a friendly against South Africa.
