Taiwanese host Kevin Tsai clarifies political stance on Weibo

Prominent Taiwanese television host Kevin Tsai issued a statement on Weibo clarifying that he has never supported Taiwan independence and expressed his hope for friendly relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. The clarification follows controversy sparked by his recent attendance at a campaign event for Shen Po-yang, a Democratic Progressive Party candidate for Taipei Mayor.

Tsai explained that his presence at various political events is part of his professional habit of observing and gathering information for interviews, noting that interviewing individuals does not imply agreement with their political stances. He also shared personal reflections on his family history, mentioning that his parents both originated from Shanghai and met in Taipei.

The timing of his post, released on October 25, has drawn significant scrutiny. Observers noted the post coincided with Taiwan's Retrocession Day and occurred just before Tsai was scheduled to attend a campaign event for Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an. While some view the statement as a necessary clarification to protect business partners and fans from backlash, others have characterized the move as a potential response to external pressure.
