Spain braces heatwave as Chile ski resort closes over lack of snow

Spain’s eastern and southern regions are under heat and storm alerts. The AEMET agency issued a yellow warning for Valencia, citing temperatures above 35 °C and thunderstorms with strong wind gusts and occasional hail. Catalonia is also facing a new heat surge, with forecasts of near‑40 °C in inland areas and a potential shift in weather patterns later in the week. Meteorological services across the Iberian Peninsula reported very warm, dry conditions and advised residents to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activity during peak heat.

In Chile, the Antuco ski centre will remain closed for a second consecutive year because snowfall has fallen far short of the 80 cm needed to open the slopes – only about 20 cm accumulated, according to club president Hugo Candia. The closure impacts local tourism and the club’s seasonal revenue. Conversely, the Nevados de Chillán resort announced the official start of its 2026 winter season, with green‑run lifts operating and new adventure‑park facilities, following recent heavy snowfall that allowed the resort to open.

Other weather updates across the Americas and Europe confirm similarly hot, dry days in Mexico City, Cancún, Puebla, Curicó, Torres del Paine and several European coastal towns, with temperatures ranging from the mid‑20s to low‑30s Celsius and no significant precipitation expected.
