Hotel and Booking Platform Data Hack Triggers Global Fraud Alerts

Confirmed cyber‑attacks on hotel management systems and major booking platforms have exposed guests' personal and reservation data. The stolen information – including real booking dates, hotel names and contact details – is being used in targeted fraud schemes sent via WhatsApp, where perpetrators cite the correct name, booking number and travel period to persuade victims to click fraudulent payment links. Consumer‑protection organisations warn that the messages often threaten automatic cancellation if the fake link is not followed.

The Arbeiterkammer Kärnten advises travelers never to provide payment details through links or chat functions, to verify any request directly through the official hotel or booking‑site contact information, and to report suspicious messages to the platform or hotel. The warning applies to incidents reported in Austria and Germany and to hotels worldwide.
