Hotel Barón closes in León amid hospitality sector concerns
The Hotel Barón, a long-standing two-star establishment in downtown León, closed its doors on July 27 after twenty years of operation. Local merchants have expressed concern regarding the closure, noting that the hotel's guests provided significant foot traffic and consumption for nearby businesses, including those near the local medical center.
While specific reasons for the closure remain unconfirmed, Eduardo Bujáidar Muñoz, president of the Association of Hotels and Motels of León, suggested that traditional lodging services are facing a crisis due to competition from platforms like Airbnb. He noted that such platforms have caused an estimated 10 to 15 percent drop in hotel occupancy rates.
There are indications that the hotel's closure may be linked to broader trends in the historic center, such as rising rents and the need for business reconversion. Some reports suggest the former owner may be interested in reactivating the business or converting the building into medical offices or clinics.
