Hotel Cascais Miragem initiates collective dismissal of 177 workers

The Hotel Cascais Miragem in Cascais has initiated a collective dismissal process affecting 177 workers, consisting of 142 permanent employees and 35 fixed-term contractors. The hotel is scheduled to close in November for extensive renovations expected to last at least 24 months.

General Manager José Branco stated that collective dismissal was the only legally viable solution due to the long-term nature of the closure. The hotel plans to invest approximately 80 million euros in the remodeling of the Health & SPA facility.

The Southern Hospitality Workers' Union has denounced the decision as incomprehensible and potentially illegal. The union argues that the administration is attempting to shift the costs of business restructuring onto workers and Social Security. Despite the union presenting several alternative solutions to avoid mass layoffs, the administration has rejected all proposals. The union is now seeking a meeting with the Secretary of State for Labor to find a resolution for the affected staff, whose guaranteed employment currently extends only until November 15.
