Hotel Granada in Maracaibo undergoes structural intervention
Authorities in Maracaibo have initiated interventions at the historic Hotel Granada, a building dating back to 1935. The site, known for its Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and Mudéjar architectural styles, has faced significant structural deterioration due to abandonment.
Local officials, including the Maracaibo Mayor's office, conducted controlled demolitions of specific sections to mitigate risks to pedestrians and nearby residents. Reports indicate the building had become a potential hazard and was allegedly being used for irregular activities.
In response to the partial collapse, the Zulia State Secretary of Culture, Giovanny Villalobos, clarified that while the building is part of a patrimonial inventory, it is private property. He has proposed an inter-institutional alliance involving the University of Zulia's Institute of Corrosion, the College of Engineers, and the College of Architects to conduct a scientific diagnosis of the structure's resistance before any further demolition occurs.
