India faces hotel room scarcity and hospitality inflation
India is experiencing significant hospitality inflation driven by a scarcity of hotel rooms. This undersupply is impacting the country's ability to host large-scale international events and is a consequence of rising demand from increased domestic travel, global business arrivals, and the growth of the destination wedding economy.
According to ICRA, premium hotel occupancy in India is expected to remain between 72% and 74% for the 2027 fiscal year. While rising rates reflect economic success and increased travel, the current trend is characterized as a scarcity premium rather than a healthy market premium, signaling potential infrastructure challenges within the sector.
