Hotel Wi-Fi networks pose significant cybersecurity risks
Hotel Wi-Fi networks pose significant cybersecurity risks to travelers, according to reports highlighting various hacking methods. Hackers often create fake networks with names nearly identical to the official hotel Wi-Fi to trick users into connecting, allowing for the theft of personal data.
Even legitimate hotel networks can be compromised. The ‘Darkhotel’ campaign is a notable example where hackers infiltrate internal hotel systems to deploy malicious code. This code triggers fake software update notifications on guests' devices; once a user accepts the update, hackers can gain control over their personal information.
The FBI has identified cyber threats via public and hotel Wi-Fi as a serious issue. Experts advise against performing sensitive activities, such as mobile banking or accessing confidential corporate data, while connected to hotel networks.
