A massive fire at Caldyne Business Park in Rowfant, near Crawley, destroyed approximately 140 vehicles on Saturday night. The site is frequently used by passengers parking their cars while traveling through Gatwick Airport.
The blaze, which erupted shortly after 9:00 PM, involved workshops, heavy goods vehicles, and gas cylinders. The intensity of the fire caused damage to high-voltage equipment, resulting in a power outage for more than 2,000 homes and businesses in the vicinity. While the electricity supply has since been restored, the fire caused significant disruption to local infrastructure and businesses.
Sussex Police have arrested a 67-year-old man on suspicion of arson. He has been released on bail as investigations continue. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service crews worked through the night and into the following Monday to manage hotspots. No injuries have been reported in connection with the incident.
