House Democrats propose 25 bills to combat wildfire risks

U.S. Representative Joe Neguse and House Democrats have introduced the ‘Wildfire Response and Readiness Act,’ a legislative package consisting of 25 bills designed to address the increasing threat of catastrophic wildfires. The proposal comes as the National Interagency Fire Center reports that wildfires have burned over 5.5 million acres this season, which is 144% above the 10-year average.

The legislation is built upon three primary pillars: creating ‘resilient lands’ through investment in prevention and post-fire restoration; establishing ‘fire-safe communities’ by improving fire detection tools and smoke impact management; and ensuring ‘wildland firefighter safety and workforce security’ by improving pay, leave, and retirement benefits.

The initiative follows a devastating season in states like Colorado, where major fires have caused mass evacuations and the deaths of five wildland firefighters due to injuries sustained during fire suppression efforts.
