House Democrats split over electric vehicle tax credit revival

Democratic lawmakers are divided over whether to restore a Biden-era tax credit for electric vehicle buyers that was repealed by Republicans in 2025. While rank-and-file House Democrats are pushing for the return of the $7,500 credit, party leadership has yet to commit to the measure.

Representative Greg Landsman of Ohio has introduced legislation to double the credit to $15,000 and make it permanent. Supporters, including Representative Mike Levin of California, argue that the repeal harms the American auto industry.

However, critics and some party insiders express concerns regarding the policy. The Cato Institute has noted that many recipients might have purchased electric vehicles regardless of the credit. Additionally, some Democratic advisers suggest the credit has developed a reputation as an “out-of-touch” policy that primarily benefits wealthier consumers.
