House Judiciary Committee report accuses California officials of ignoring ICE detainers

A 22-page report from the House Judiciary Committee accuses California Governor Gavin Newsom and Democratic leaders in major cities of ignoring nearly 9,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers. The investigation, led by Representative Jim Jordan and Representative Tom McClintock, alleges that sanctuary city policies have shielded individuals with criminal histories from deportation.

The report highlights specific compliance rates in major metropolitan areas. In Los Angeles, police reportedly honored only four out of 4,177 ICE detainers received between January 2020 and June 2026. The San Francisco Sheriff’s Office reportedly rejected all 2,201 detainers received between January 2020 and August 2026, while the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office declined 2,527 detainers between January 2023 and June 2026.

According to ICE figures cited in the report, California authorities allegedly released 4,561 immigrants sought by federal agents between January 20, 2025, and early February 2026. The report also noted similar actions regarding sanctuary policies in Oregon.
