House Martin named Bird of the Year 2027

The House Martin (Delichon urbicum) has been elected as the Bird of the Year 2027 in Germany. Organized by the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) and the Bavarian State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV), the online vote saw over 148,000 participants. The House Martin secured a decisive victory with 45.2 percent of the votes (67,050 votes).

Other candidates included the Pied Flycatcher (22.3 percent), Hooded Crow (15.2 percent), White Wagtail (10.8 percent), and Crane (6.5 percent). The House Martin was elected in absentia, as the species is currently wintering south of the Sahara in Africa and is not expected to return to its breeding grounds in Europe until April.

The selection aims to raise awareness for conservation. The House Martin is currently listed as endangered in Germany. Key threats to the species include the loss of nesting sites due to modern architecture and building renovations, the illegal removal of nests, and a decline in insect populations, which serves as their primary food source.
