House of Terror Museum protests erupt in Budapest

Protesters gathered in Budapest outside the House of Terror Museum on Sunday to demonstrate against the temporary closure of the institution and the dismissal of its director, Mária Schmidt.

The unrest follows an announcement by Zoltán Tarr, the minister responsible for social relations and culture, regarding a review of the museum's operations and the termination of Schmidt's mandate. While the government later announced the museum would reopen on September 22 with a week of free admission, organizers including Zsolt Bayer, András Bencsik, and Gergely Huth proceeded with the demonstration.

Speakers at the rally accused the government led by Péter Magyar of attempting to politically influence the museum's historical narrative and undermining the memory of the 1956 Revolution. Critics characterized the administration's actions as an attempt to establish a new form of political control over cultural institutions. Meanwhile, some commentators noted that the museum's future may involve a debate over whether it should function as a rigorous historical site or a high-impact tourist attraction.
