House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres June 21, 2026

The third season of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon launches on Sunday 21 June 2026. The eight‑episode run begins with a 72‑minute opener that features the naval “Battle of the Gullet”, described by the showrunner Ryan Condal as “the craziest episode of television ever made”. The season will air simultaneously on HBO and the Max streaming service in the United States, on HBO Max in Mexico, Brazil and other Latin American markets, and on Sky/WOW in Germany, with weekly releases for the remainder of the series.

The storyline continues the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, with the Black faction led by Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) battling the Green faction of Aegon II (Tom Glynn‑Carney) and their allies. New cast members such as James Norton join returning stars Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint and others.

HBO has confirmed that the series is planned for four seasons, with Season 4 already green‑lit as the final chapter. Critical reception to the early episodes is overwhelmingly positive, holding a 97 % Rotten Tomatoes score. A notable production change is the updated opening theme by Ramin Djawadi, featuring added percussion to match the season’s darker tone. The series remains a flagship title for Max, reinforcing the franchise’s global popularity.
