Leon Black held in contempt of Congress over Epstein investigation
The U.S. House of Representatives has unanimously voted to hold billionaire investor and former Apollo Global Management CEO Leon Black in contempt of Congress. The resolution follows Black’s refusal to comply with two subpoenas issued by the House Oversight Committee as part of its investigation into the federal government’s handling of cases involving convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Black reportedly failed to appear for a scheduled deposition on September 3 and declined to produce requested nondisclosure agreements (NDAs). While Black participated in a voluntary, closed-door interview in June, lawmakers stated he walked out after refusing to answer questions regarding NDAs. Black has challenged the subpoenas in court, arguing they exceed the committee’s authority and seek private information without a legitimate legislative purpose.
The matter has been referred to the Department of Justice, which will determine whether to pursue criminal prosecution. Contempt of Congress is a misdemeanor that can carry up to one year in prison and a fine. Black has maintained that he had no knowledge of Epstein’s criminal conduct and has defended his significant financial payments to Epstein as being for tax and estate planning services.
