House Oversight expands prediction market insider trading probe
The U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, led by Chairman James Comer, has expanded its investigation into potential insider trading within prediction markets. While the inquiry initially focused on platforms such as Polymarket and Kalshi, it has now reportedly expanded its scope to include decentralized derivatives platform Hyperliquid.
The investigation seeks to determine if participants are using material nonpublic information to profit from event-based contracts. Previous findings identified suspicious trading patterns, including over 80 trades on Polymarket that appeared to anticipate geopolitical events. One notable case involved an Army Master Sgt. who was federally indicted for allegedly using classified information regarding a Venezuela operation to profit on the platform.
Legislators are examining whether existing securities laws and insider-trading frameworks apply to crypto-native market infrastructure. Rep. Comer has signaled intentions to propose legislation that would explicitly prohibit government employees from trading on prediction markets related to government actions using non-public knowledge.
