House subcommittee hearing examines alleged Islamist-Marxist influence

During a House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on South and Central Asia hearing titled ‘Trojan Horses: Covert Foreign Malign Influence Operations in America,’ Mike Gonzalez, a senior fellow at The Heritage Foundation, testified regarding what he termed a ‘red-green alliance.’

Gonzalez argued that a merger of Islamism and Marxism is being utilized by certain nongovernmental organizations and individuals to weaken the United States and ‘sow chaos.’ He claimed this alliance seeks to implement Islamist concepts, such as Sharia, within American institutions.

According to Gonzalez, this coalition stems from a shift in the Marxist Left during the 1960s to focus on identity-based groups rather than industrial workers. He asserted that such influences are visible in various social and political issues, including immigration, the environment, and campus unrest, and called for legislative action to protect the country from these perceived destabilization efforts.
