Household Cavalry horse collapses in London heatwave

On 12 July 2026, a horse serving in Britain’s Household Cavalry nearly collapsed outside the Household Cavalry Museum in Whitehall as temperatures in London rose to around 30 °C. The rider activated an emergency alarm and soldiers moved the animal and rider into the shade while tourists filmed the incident and some tried to take photographs.

The video, which quickly amassed hundreds of thousands of views, prompted online commentary calling for a modernisation of the royal guard and questioning the continued use of horses in extreme heat. A similar episode occurred two months earlier during the May heatwave, when another guard horse showed signs of distress and ran in circles before guards intervened.
