Household cleaning: Effective uses for vinegar, baking soda, and other agents

Common household cleaning agents such as white vinegar, baking soda, soda crystals, and sodium percarbonate each serve specific functions in bathroom maintenance. White vinegar is highly effective at dissolving limescale on shower walls, faucets, and toilet bowls due to its acetic acid content. However, it should never be used on marble or limestone.

Baking soda acts as a mild abrasive and deodorizer for sinks and bathtubs, while soda crystals serve as a heavy-duty degreaser for pipes and heavily soiled floors. Sodium percarbonate is recommended for whitening darkened tile grout when used with warm water.

Experts warn against several common mistakes. Mixing white vinegar with baking soda is chemically counterproductive, as the acid and base neutralize each other, rendering the solution inactive. Additionally, mixing vinegar with bleach is dangerous as it releases chlorine gas. While vinegar has antimicrobial properties, studies indicate that a simple dilution in water is insufficient to kill common bacteria like Escherichia coli.
