Cleaning experts suggest using white vinegar as an effective household tool for maintaining toilets. Due to its acetic acid content, vinegar can loosen mineral deposits, limescale, and dirt, particularly around the exterior base of the toilet where moisture and dust often accumulate.

A recommended cleaning routine involves removing visible debris, spraying the vinegar, letting it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, scrubbing the surface, and drying it. However, a critical safety warning is issued: vinegar must never be mixed with bleach or products containing sodium hypochlorite, as this combination is hazardous.

Regarding frequency, Delia Cannings of the British Cleaning Council suggests that for a typical household of five people, a thorough cleaning once a week is sufficient, taking approximately 10 minutes. For a more intensive maintenance routine, experts recommend occasionally removing the toilet seat to clean hidden hinges and supports. Microbiologist Primrose Freestone notes that cleaning frequency should increase if a household member has an infectious disease to ensure proper disinfection of the bowl, seat, and flush button.
