Household cleaning hacks using laundry detergent and softener

Common household products like liquid laundry detergent and fabric softener can be repurposed for various cleaning tasks, though specific precautions are necessary to avoid surface damage.

Liquid laundry detergent acts as a multi-purpose cleaner due to its surfactants and enzymes. It can be used to degrease kitchen hoods, refresh upholstery, clean plastic toys, and assist with slow drains. For effective use, the detergent must be diluted with water and thoroughly rinsed to prevent residue, films, or irritation. It is important to distinguish standard laundry detergent from caustic soda, which is intended for heavy-duty plumbing work.

Fabric softener is frequently used as a hack to make floors smell like fresh laundry. While it provides a long-lasting scent by depositing a film of cationic surfactants on surfaces, it does not clean or disinfect. When using softener in mop water, it is best limited to a few drops in five liters of water for tile or unpolished stoneware. Users should avoid using it on wood, waxed surfaces, or non-slip floors, as it can create slippery films or dull the finish. Additionally, using softener with microfiber mops may clog the fibers and redistribute allergens.
