Household efficiency: Dishwashing and laundry habits

Household efficiency and hygiene practices regarding water and laundry usage are being examined for 2026.

Regarding dishwashing, modern A-label dishwashers are significantly more efficient than manual washing. An A-label dishwasher uses between 9 and 12 liters of water per cycle and consumes 0.8 to 1.2 kWh of energy. In contrast, manual washing typically uses 40 to 80 liters of water per session, though conscious users who fill a basin may reduce this to 15 to 25 liters. Heating the large volume of water required for manual washing can result in energy consumption that meets or exceeds that of a modern dishwasher.

In terms of clothing hygiene, experts suggest that frequency of washing depends on skin contact and perspiration. Underwear should ideally be changed daily to prevent skin irritation, odors, and fungal infections caused by the accumulation of sweat and bacteria. While items like T-shirts may not require daily washing, they should be replaced more frequently if they involve direct skin contact, sweat, or visible stains.
