Household electronics and placement can disrupt Wi-Fi signals
Common household items and placement issues can significantly disrupt home Wi-Fi connectivity. Microwave ovens are a notable source of interference because they operate in the same 2.4 GHz frequency range as many Wi-Fi standards. While the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz) notes that leakage radiation from microwaves typically remains well below safety limits, it can still interfere with routers, repeaters, and other wireless devices.
Other potential sources of signal degradation include baby monitors, cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, and metal cabinets or refrigerators. The industry association Bitkom recommends positioning routers away from these objects and metal surfaces. Additionally, the increasing number of smart home devices, such as vacuum robots and connected appliances, can consume significant bandwidth and cause network congestion.
To improve stability, experts suggest placing routers in a central, elevated position rather than in corners or basements. Maintaining up-to-date firmware and performing regular restarts can also help mitigate issues caused by outdated software or long-term continuous operation.
