Household energy efficiency and appliance maintenance tips

Recent observations regarding household energy consumption and appliance maintenance highlight several ways consumers can optimize their homes.

Regarding kitchen appliances, while traditional refrigerators are generally unaffected by small decorative magnets, modern smart refrigerators equipped with touchscreens and sensitive electronic sensors require caution. Experts suggest consulting manufacturer guidelines before covering these doors with magnets, as they may contain components sensitive to magnetic fields. Additionally, keeping refrigerator condensers clean is noted as a more effective way to improve energy efficiency than worrying about small magnets.

In the living room, large-screen televisions and their associated peripherals can significantly impact electricity bills. High brightness and vivid mode settings can increase a TV's power demand by 30–50 percent. Furthermore, devices left in standby mode—such as set-top boxes, gaming consoles, and soundbars—can lead to unnecessary annual consumption of 150–400 kWh. Modern large-format TVs may even exceed the annual energy usage of efficient refrigerators.
