Household finance challenges in Japan regarding income and savings

Financial planning and household management remain significant challenges for Japanese families navigating varying income levels and rising costs. For individuals transitioning from high-income households to marriages with moderate incomes, such as 5 million yen annually, managing fixed costs like housing and education is critical. Data from the Ministry of Education indicates that annual learning costs for public school students range from approximately 366,000 yen for elementary school to nearly 600,000 yen for high school, excluding university expenses.

Discrepancies between perceived and actual savings often emerge as individuals approach retirement. A case study of a 58-year-old worker earning 8.5 million yen highlights how delegating household management can lead to a lack of awareness regarding total assets. Despite high earnings, factors such as mortgage payments, vehicle replacements, and significant education expenses can deplete savings. According to Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications data, the average savings for households headed by individuals aged 50–59 is approximately 18.82 million yen, though over 53% of such households also carry debt.
