Household finance management and spending trends in Germany
Managing household finances in Germany involves identifying various 'money eaters'—recurring costs that diminish savings. Major expenses include housing, energy, and transportation. According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, German households spent an average of 1,181 euros monthly on housing, energy, and maintenance in 2024, accounting for 36.3 percent of private consumption. Transportation averaged 448 euros, while food, beverages, and tobacco cost approximately 457 euros per month.
For low-income households earning less than 1,300 euros net per month, housing and food can consume up to 64 percent of consumption expenditures. Other significant drains on finances include expensive energy tariffs, unused subscriptions, insurance redundancies, overdraft fees, and impulse purchases.
Regarding bank balances, the Deutsche Bundesbank reported that the average checking account balance in Germany was approximately 12,200 euros based on data collected in 2023. However, individual financial security depends more on the relationship between income, liabilities, and assets than on a specific balance alone.
