Household hacks for removing odors from shoes and laundry

Common household items can be used to combat unpleasant odors in footwear and laundry. To address smelly shoes, which are caused by moisture and bacteria, using cat litter or cornstarch can help absorb excess moisture. Placing cat litter in a cloth inside the shoe overnight or sprinkling cornstarch inside can effectively dry the interior.

For laundry, adding approximately half a cup of baking soda to a standard wash load can neutralize odors in clothes, towels, and bedding. This is particularly useful for removing smells caused by dampness or mold. Experts note that using excessive detergent can actually contribute to odors by leaving residue on fabrics or building up inside the washing machine.
