Household maintenance: Three minor issues to address to avoid costly repairs

Small household issues, if left unaddressed, can lead to expensive repairs involving damage behind walls, under floors, or within electrical boxes. Three specific problems are highlighted as high priority for homeowners.

First, a toilet that drips or experiences a ‘ghost flush’ between uses often indicates a worn flapper valve. This rubber seal can deform due to mineral deposits from hard water or cleaning chemicals. Alternatively, a continuous hissing sound may point to a defective fill valve or an improperly adjusted float, causing water to flow into the overflow pipe.

Other critical signs include flickering lights when switched on and narrow sealant joints that detach from bathtub edges. Addressing these minor faults early can prevent significant financial burdens.
